Just couldn’t resist posting this picture of Eli (Leroy v. Rietnisse), which I took in our backyard the other day while experimenting with the Polarizer filter.  I am delighted with the results, which required absolutely NO adjustments to color, focus or exposure.  The only changes I made were a little work with the Clone stamp to remove his fur saver collar and a blade of grass from his mouth.  The following are the photo’s technical specs: Exposure 1/640 sec at f 5.6; focal length 56 mm; ISO 640; Lens 28 – 135 mm / f 3.5 – 5.6 IS USM (the standard lens that comes with the Canon EOS 7D).

Enjoy and may you have a blessed Pascha (Easter) weekend!

I am delighted to announce that our five-year old male, German Shepherd, Leroy v. Rietnisse (call name Eli), has earned his second SchH 3 title.  He also “V’d” protection, with a score of 97. You can view his protection routine on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7J8PN9dX7A

The Raleigh Schutzhund Association in Bahama, NC offered wonderful southern hospitality, encouragement and assistance to all competitors.  We extend our thanks and appreciation to the club, its members and to SV Judge Hans Schultz.

I did take a few pictures, including experimenting with a polarizing filter to reduce the glare on the field.  I think it helped the pictures, especially when my back was to the sun. The colors are richer, less washed out.  I had to bump up the ISO a good bit to get a proper exposure, although I could have adjusted the aperture.  The filter is a HOYA Pro 1 Digital Filter – Circular PL. I will post some pictures in a later entry and have more to say about this filter as I gain more experience with it. With the weather FINALLY getting warmer and clearer, I hope to get back to some serious shooting.

Stay tuned…and thanks for visiting!

I am happy to announce that Eli (Leroy v. Rietnisse), our five-year old male German Shepherd, has earned his Schutzhund 3 (SchH) title.  We are very proud of him. The Greater Atlanta Schutzhund Association club trial was held last Saturday, November 21st.  It was a full trial, with five Schutzhund dogs and eight BHs.

Our club now has three dogs titled to SchH 3, and each of these dogs is handler owned and trained (HOT).  Congratulations Gary and Tucker, Mitchell and Matrix, and Peter and Eli.  Also, thank you to all who helped and encouraged us along the way. Schutzhund is a team sport, and none of us could have achieved a SchH 3 on our dogs without you.

Also, thank you to Frank Philips, who judged the event.  His humor was infectious and made the day even more enjoyable, and his critiques were insightful and very helpful.

I took some photos at the trial, which was an interesting experiment given the lighting changes all day. We started the day at 7 am for tracking and didn’t finish until about 4:30 pm – a dawn to dusk day.  I’ll have more to say about this and will share a few of my best photos of the day in my next post.

Best wishes for a Happy and safe Thanksgiving.

This past weekend, we attended the Central Alabama Schutzhund Club’s trial.  Eli, our four-year old male German Shepherd, earned high obedience with a score of 92. A fellow club member, Mitchell Walker and his dog Matrix, a three-year old male German Shepherd, earned a SchH 2 with high protection and high in trial.  At this trial, there were six Schutzhund dogs (one SchH 1, four SchH 2 and one SchH 3) and 10 BH dogs.  Congratulations to Peter and Eli and to Mitchell and Matix.  Our club trial will be on November 21 in Monroe, Georgia.  Visit the GASA website (www.gasaonline.com) for details about this event.  If you’re in the Atlanta area, please come by and watch.

Also, thank you to the Central Alabama club for their hospitality. Although the weather was wet, and fortunately cool for the dogs, the club members warmly welcomed all the competitors and spectators, which made the day a lot of fun! We look forward to attending future trials at Central Alabama.

Thank you for allowing me an indulgence of showing off our four-year old male German Shepherd, Leroy v. Rietnisse (call name Eli).  We just returned from his SchH 2 trial, and while he did not do well in the tracking for a variety of reasons, his obedience and protection routines were stellar.  These videos also demonstrate how harsh sunlight can really play havoc on the images being recorded.  I will have more to say about lighting as a friend or foe in later posts. We will trial him again in the early fall for both the SchH 2 and SchH 3.  Summer is too hot, and the trial season is mostly over in the southeast.

The judge was Thomas Lapp, SV, and the trial was hosted by the Greater Cincinnati Schutzhund Club on Saturday, May 30, 2009.
